Final grades are done!

The grades are all posted on WebCT. The column labeled "Current Grade" is now your final grade in the class.

Mean on the final was 156; range was 40-200. Here's the distribution of the final grades.

Final Exam info

The physiology final is on Friday, 12 May, at 11:00.

This will be a cumulative exam worth 200 points, so you're probably already worrying about it. This exam will be a little different from the others, so here's some information to help you study.

There will be 6 sections on the exam, each worth 50 points. You get to skip two of the sections, which means you can plan ahead and simplify your studying a little bit by specializing. The sections are:

  1. Nerve, muscle, and sensory organs
  2. Cardiovascular system and respiration
  3. Lymphatics and the immune system
  4. Digestion and metabolism
  5. The endocrine system
  6. Urogenital system: reproduction, embryology, and excretion

This should make it a little easier to focus.

There will be no multiple choice questions on this exam.

We will have a review session in class on Friday. I'll also be available in my office on the Thursday before the exam from 8:00-1:00.

Third exam!

The next exam is on Friday, 7 April; I've modified the Lectures page to highlight all the stuff that will be on this exam in pink.

On Wednesday, we'll do the usual thing: come prepared with questions, ask me to review any of the relevant material, etc. I will be available in my office most of the day on Wednesday, from 9:05-2:30, if you want to stop by and ask questions. Office hours on Thursday will be from 2:00-5:00.

WebCT?

I think I've got it working, finally. At least the demo student account displays grades for me now...let me know if it's working for you real students.

Vista, ick

I think I've got your grades posted to WebCT Vista…let me know if it isn't working. I'm not too keen on this overblown upgrade to boring (but functional) old WebCT, and it's been a bit of a struggle learning all the new ways to get this thing working.

Note: there is no content on the WebCT site other than the "My Grades" link.

Our second exam

As you all know, it's coming up on Friday, 3 March, and you're all wondering exactly what is on it. I've revised the Lectures page to highlight all the stuff that will be on the exam in light blue; I hope that helps. Basically, this exam will cover muscle function and higher order neuro: not membrane physiology, but everything to do with circuits and autonomic, spinal, and brain function.

As I usually do, the class on the Wednesday before the exam will be open to any questions or review that you want. I'm also going to be available in my office from 12:30-6:00 Wednesday afternoon if anyone wants to stop by and ask questions then. I'm afraid I won't be quite so accessible on Thursday—that day I'm kept fairly busy with the Principles class—so don't wait until the last minute to come by with your concerns! You might be able to catch me via IM Thursday evening: I'm on AIM, and via Jabber. Email also works, but sometimes I've got such a flood of email messages that I can be a bit slow responding.

I'll see you on Friday!

Logistics

Class hours: Sci 1020, MWF 8:00-9:05.

Office hours: Sci 2390, MW 9:05-10:00, or by appointment.

Resources

Textbook: Tortora GJ and Grabowski SR (2003) Principles of Anatomy and Physiology, 11th edition. John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Hoboken, NJ.
The 8th, 9th, and 10th editions are perfectly acceptable for this course.

Gooch's web pages: Van Gooch has taught this course in previous years, and I include links to his course notes in the syllabus above. I am following his general outline of the content closely, but I will deviate in many of the details. These are still a great source for a different perspective on the material.

My web pages:

Lectures. My lecture materials will be in development over the course of the semester, but the content as set out last time I taught the course are available at http://physiology.pharyngula.org/lectures/. I will be making changes to these as I go along, so I don't recommend rushing out and printing them all out right now.

Announcements. Announcements and news relevant to physiology and this course will be made on the course main page, at http://physiology.pharyngula.org/.

Personal questions, questions about grades, etc. that would not be of broad interest to the class can be sent to me by e-mail, to myersp@mrs.umn.edu, or even better, by stopping by my office or lab.

Grading

Grading will be based on one 10 point quiz, 4 100 point exams, and one 200 point final. I will be doing spot checks for attendance and participation, which will be used to decide your grade in case your score falls on a borderline. Exam scores will be normalized to the highest score in the class. My grading scale:

F : 0-49%
D : 50-64%
C : 65-79%
B : 80-90%
A : 91-100%

You must earn a normalized score of at least 50% on the final exam in order to pass this course.

Grades will be posted on WebCT. Any complaints about the grading of exams must be made to me in writing, within one week of the day the exam is returned in class.

Make-up Exams

If you should miss an exam for a good reason, you must contact me by the Monday following the scheduled exam date in order to set up a make-up exam. The exam must be taken within a week of the scheduled exam, at a time of my choosing.

I'm reasonably liberal about accepting excuses. You should be warned about a few of my habits, though.

  • I like to give exams at 7AM—no conflicts with other courses.
  • With only a few students taking make-up exams, I can indulge my fondness for peculiar and probing essay questions.
  • I get increasingly strict about what excuses I will accept with students who make a habit of missing exams.
  • I do not accept any excuse for missing a make-up exam.
